Course : Translanguaging in the Greek EFL classroom

Professor PhD Ofelia García gives a talk on the topic of translanguaging. The talk was recorded during the international ring lecture MuDiLe (Multilingualism and Diversity Lectures) 2017 which took place at the University of Hildesheim (Bühler Campus) from 6/7/2017 to 9/7/2017.

When we leave behind the monolingual bias, a new world full of possibilities emerges. The webinar will discuss some of these possibilities by exploring the concepts of ELF and translanguaging, showing how they are connected, and providing practical ideas of how to use translanguaging practices in the classroom.

Professor Li Wei is Chair of Applied Linguistics and Director of the UCL Centre for Applied Linguistics at the UCL Institute of Education, University College London, UK, and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, UK. His co-publication Translanguaging: Language, Bilingualism and Education won the 2015 British Association of Applied Linguistics Book Prize, and his current work focuses on the creativity and criticality of multilingual and multimodal language users.

Linguistic Mediation explained to make it easier for teachers and students to understand what it is, how to make the most of it in their lessons and the difference between strategies and microskills.

Cross-linguistic Mediation Practice. A tourist and a guide carrying out an interaction and mediation task. The tourist needs help to understand a leaflet with a selection of restaurants so she can decide which place would suit her preferences best.

Intralinguistic Mediation Practice. A Spanish flatmate needs to open a bank account in an English-speaking country. She needs help to understand the information she has found on the Internet, so she asks her Scottish flatmate for help.

This is an example of a lesson plan for teaching mediation skills to speakers whose L1 is Spanish.
