Reconstructing suprasegmentals

(ENG463) -  Donka Minkova

Περιγραφή Μαθήματος

Suprasegmentals is a traditional term used to refer to units and features of speech above the single segment, such as syllables, duration/weight, stress, intonation. All of these are ‘hidden structure’, and unlike the letter-to-sound matching for individual segments, at least for older Germanic, our texts yield very limited orthographic clues on syllable division, syllable weight, word- or phrasal-stress. Using case studies from Old and Middle English, I will provide examples of possible approaches to suprasegmental reconstruction, highlighting their advantages and pitfalls.
