Phonics: designing supplementary material for school textbook

Περιγραφή Μαθήματος

 The present workshop aims at familiarising future teachers with the notion, importance and practical use of phonics in EL teaching.

It aspires to help future teachers in the following ways:

I. In terms of knowledge: Future teachers become familiar with the particular reading method, revisiting at the same time basic phonemes of the English language. 

II. In terms of skills: Future teachers learn to design phonics based reading exercises and a relevant lesson, as well as a simple phonics booklet that can be used in parallel with any given coursebook for beginners.

III. In terms of attitudes: Teachers become motivated to perform an authentic task, by improving a widely used coursebook. Furthermore, they face critically any coursebook they are provided with, either by enriching it and/or altering it. They also recognise the value of phonics in the early stages of EL teaching and get motivated to visit important FL documents with the purpose of transferring relevant information in their teaching.

  • Using phonics to develop your learners reading skills

    Novice teachers of English are provided with practical ideas on how to implement the phonics based reading method in their teaching. They will learn i) how to design activities that combine the various phonemes of the English language with phonics ii) how to design short phonics-based reading lessons iii) how to compile a simple phonics booklet, which can be used as a companion to any given coursebook for beginners.
