GENERAL OVERVIEW
This seminar will introduce students to various aspects of teaching and learning English via lexical approaches and using digital technologies. Language learners consistently report that learning vocabulary in another language is second in difficulty only to speaking (and the two are closely related). We will examine the shift away from a grammar focus towards a more lexical approach to learning and teaching. Throughout the course we will have hands-on experience of a variety of different digital technologies.
Week 1 will focus on how many words we need to know, which ones, and what it means to know a word (more than just form and meaning). Week 2 will focus on how we learn words in an additional language, and ways of assessing vocabulary knowledge and use. We will also debunk some of the myths about vocabulary learning. Week 3 will focus on how we can teach vocabulary and lexical approaches based on the notion of word chunks and collocation and in doing so, we will examine the relationship between grammar and lexis. Week 4 will explore the role of lexis in the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, as well as how to plan lessons with a vocabulary focus - and using digital technology.
Each week will have a short written assessment, which will be a mixture of group and individual tasks.
