  • Course Aims and Learning Outcomes

The aim of this e-course is to familiarize future-to-be EFL teachers with the notions of assessment and testing within a young learner context and get them to question their views or stereotypes about them. It also aspires to help participants with designing their own assessment tasks and tests at A1/A2 level within a Primary school context and that of the KPG exam.

On completing their study of this e-course, students should be able to:

    • define basic terms related to assessment
    • distinguish between assessment and testing
    • contemplate on the advantages and disadvantages of testing
    • identify principles guiding young learner assessment and testing
    • become acquainted with the challenges facing assessment task designers in a young learner context
    • design assessment tasks intended for Primary school learners
    • design a test intended for Primary school learners
    • become familiar with the KPG A1/A2 level exam
    • identify design requirements for a KPG A1/A2 level activity
    • prepare four activities, each on one of the four skills tested through the KPG A1/A2 level exam

    Course Organisation and Structure

The course is divided into four weeks, so that your study can become more manageable. At the end of the first three weeks there is an assessment quiz and there is also a short assessment quiz midway during the first week. The first two weeks have a more theoretical orientation and participants are invited to engage in group discussions as well as individually submit their views around issues related to assessment, with a special interest in the ‘assessment vs testing’ debate and young learner assessment. Weeks 3 and 4 are of a more practical character, as this is when students are invited to design their own assessment material. Each week is divided in thematic sections, called units. The topic of each unit is described under each unit heading and a list of required reading material as well as videos follows. Notes in brackets following some article/book/material entries suggest the part/chapter of the specific article/book/material that must be studied.
